2024 Mercedes G-Class
2024 Ferrari Purosangue

Safety

The G-Class’ pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Purosangue doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the G-Class and Purosangue have rear cross-traffic warning, but the G-Class has Active Brake Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Purosangue’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the G-Class and the Purosangue have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Mercedes G-Class weighs 1072 to 1360 pounds more than the Ferrari Purosangue. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The G-Class comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Purosangue’s 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

The G-Class’ corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Purosangue’s (5 vs. 3 years).

There are almost 10 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Ferrari dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the G-Class’ warranty.

Reliability

The Purosangue’s redline is at 8250 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The G-Class has a 6300 to 7200 RPM redline.

Engine

The AMG G 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 99 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 528) than the Purosangue’s 6.5 DOHC V12.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the G-Class gets better mileage than the Purosangue:

MPG

13 city/16 hwy

63 4.0 turbo V8

13 city/16 hwy

Purosangue

AWD

6.5 DOHC V12

11 city/15 hwy

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the G-Class’ fuel efficiency. The Purosangue doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes G-Class, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Purosangue.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the G-Class has larger standard tires than the Purosangue (275/55R19 vs. 255/35R22). The G-Class’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Purosangue (295/40R22 vs. 255/35R22).

Chassis

The G 550 is 6.1 inches shorter than the Purosangue, making the G-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The G-Class has standard seating for 5 passengers; the Purosangue can only carry 4.

The G-Class has 10 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Purosangue (107 vs. 97).

Cargo Capacity

The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Purosangue (38.1 vs. 16.7 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The G-Class has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Purosangue doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The G-Class’ standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Purosangue’s available power window controls are spread out on the center console where they can’t be seen without the driver completely removing his eyes from the road.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the G-Class has a standard rear wiper. The Purosangue doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The G-Class’ Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Purosangue doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
